What Angers Folks About the Gospel

The Good News of Jesus Christ, the Gospel Message, makes people mad because they do not appreciate being confronted with the darkness of sin. And they don’t like to have to face that their entire way of life is wrong. AND they are offended to know that Believers do not live sinful lives.

“We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.  We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.” 1 John 5:18-20 NASB.

Look closely at these statements of the Apostle John:

  1. Believers do not live in sin and are incapable of any sin. This is true because the new man in Christ possesses the sinless nature of the indwelling Holy Spirit. The Savior indeed keeps His Church from sin.
  2. Satan cannot touch the Believer. Read Job chapter 1 and find that God protects Believers from Satan.
  3. Our world is under the power of Evil. In Job 1:12 we find this, “Then the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the Lord.”
  4. Jesus Christ is the Savior of the World. “We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world.” 1 John 4:14.

The reason(s) that lost people hate the people of God is their own hate for God. “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.” John 15:18-19. These people are known to hate God because many do not believe that He is. Ask them about this and find the agitation surrounding their speech. This subject clearly agitates them. They hate both God and those who follow after Him.

Matthew reveals the separation between good and evil. “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.” Matthew 13:41-43.

The problem with evil is simple: darkness always gives way to light because evil is inferior to good. God is superior to Satan and Believers are protected by Jesus Christ. This infuriates those who do not believe.

Identity of Every Believer

No doubt, one of the most powerful truths in understanding the New Testament is our identity ‘in Christ.’ Paul knows that the relationship of righteousness in Christ is the difference between spiritual life and death for Believers. In his letters, Paul speaks of being “In Him” and “In Christ” more than 150 times.

Therefore, being ‘in Christ’ is to know a powerful spiritual transformation. Jesus said we must be the salt and light by sharing the good news with the nations and by doing so we will bring honor and glory to His Name.

We read as Paul rebukes the Corinthians, “Why are we in danger every hour? I affirm by the pride in you that I have in Christ Jesus our Lord: I die every day! If I fought wild animals in Ephesus with only human hope, what good did that do me? If the dead are not raised, Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.” Come to your senses and stop sinning, for some people are ignorant about God. I say this to your shame.” 1 Corinthians 15:30-34 HCSB.

(In Acts 19 Luke describes a riot in Ephesus and this is what Paul most likely describes when he says, “If I fought wild animals in Ephesus with on human hope…”)

Paul’s warning to the Corinthians and every Believer in conflict with sin was they did not understand what being ‘in Christ’ is. He knew the importance of Believers knowing what being ‘in Christ’ means would transform their behavior. Paul knew that Believers must not be entangled with sin. God is interested in seeing hearts and lives changed because of being in a relationship with Christ.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come. Everything is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed the message of reconciliation to us. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, certain that God is appealing through us. We plead on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God.” He made the One who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:17-21.

Your sins in life do not change your relationship with Christ. The fact you are righteous is why you can overcome sins, and this relationship provides us the ability not to live in it. What does it mean when Believers do fall into temptation resulting in sin? The Bible informs us that we can stand up and move forward in daily life, knowing that we are to be conformed to His image.

“Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:1-2.

Being the Elect

Being the Elect of God is important to understand, but this is not an easy task.

The world doesn’t dislike you. The world’s not irritated by you. The world hates you because the world hates Jesus. If, indeed…in deed, Believers love and follow the biblical teachings of Jesus Christ, the world around us will HATE us. I have found that not only those outside the local church, but some of those inside the local church will hate us. And as Christians, we’ve got to be aware of this and accept what is happening. for that. That which we must understand is we must deny the Gospel and Jesus Christ. We must live so that the world will love us, but the church may hate us. We must make a very clear choice. We MUST remain in the teachings of Christ, we MUST love Him because He first loved us.

And Jesus is very clear. Believers cannot earn the love of both the church and the world. And this is a realization of the task ahead of us. I have found that Christians want to be loved by the church and the world. But in the end, that will turn out to be impossible. If we are to be faithful to Jesus Christ, the world in which we exist will inevitably HATE us. Are you prepared?

Jesus said the following things:

“This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. This I command you, that you love one another.” John 15:12-17 NASB.

Please note that Jesus is speaking to His disciples…”You did not choose Me, but I chose you to bear fruit AND to love one another.” However, there is going to be chaos…

The chaos will be within the heart of every Believer, every Follower of the Risen Christ, “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.” John 15:18-19.

The world around us hates us because we are so very different. Because we are His disciples we know the difference. The difference is we are His elect, His chosen to do what He has chosen us to do. “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10. Too often we get caught up in the argument that we are only chosen before for salvation. But this is not the case at all. We have been chosen to be His slaves, to be His servants to do His intentional good works. This is the reason we abide in Him. “. You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.” We are to be His ‘fruit-bearers.’

We are elected, chosen, to go into the world, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you…” Matthew 28:19-20.

Focusing On the Message of God’s Word

At the heart of the Bible is one clear message, God redeems humankind through the blood sacrifice, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

On December 31, 1995, Dr. W.A. Criswell, then Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas delivered a concise message entitled, “The Scarlet Thread Through the Bible.” The title of his message is the inspiration for what I am writing here. I do, however, begin this with the same verse of Scripture Dr. Criswell utilized.

In Leviticus 17:11 we discover “the life of a creature is in the blood.” The book communicates to us that God’s people must receive God’s redemption followed by obedience to His teaching to be worthy of Him.

From Genesis 22:1-2 we read this, “Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” NSB.

The shedding of animal blood in the Old Testament is a sacrificial atonement for our sins and this was but a temporary demonstration of our faith in God’s plan for redemption. This was necessary until the coming of Christ, ”The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29. Because “But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23. Jesus paid the great price of salvation for forgiveness and reconciliation that has been paid by the Creator Himself, becoming man and taking all our sins upon Himself.

In the New Testament we read about the blood sacrifices becoming obsolete because of Christ’s death and resurrection, “But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Hebrews 9:24-28. And after three days He was “raised again, “but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification. Romans 4:24-25-25.

God provided redemption through the blood of Jesus and then the end will come, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He *said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” Then He said to me, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.” Revelation 21:1-6.

There is but one way to fix everything that has gone wrong in our broken world. We must understand God’s redemptive story found in the Bible for here God has revealed to told us the only solution. Just as Jesus said, “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas *said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus *said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” John 14:1-6.

If are to know His story of redemption we must begin in Genesis and end in Revelation. There is no other solution.

Jesus is the Answer, Jesus is Lord.

My Journey Through Difficulty

Perhaps the one man in Scripture who demonstrates an incredible ability to endure is Job. Despite enormous odds, this man of God not simply endured, but profoundly overcame undeniable odds because of His faith. Job lost his wealth, his children, and even his own health, but remained steadfast in his faith, refusing to curse God or abandon his beliefs.

75 years of life have provided more than enough life experiences to learn the lessons provided not simply for survival, but reliance upon God.

Observing more than a few people working their way through the deaths of friends and loved ones and many of them because tragedies. There have been those who have endured loss of income because of many issues, bodily injuries, illnesses, and many other factors. However, death seems to be the most difficult of all.

My thinking is that sudden and unexpected deaths are the most difficult to confront. Most who are shocked by the news of sudden death find the pain and grief almost too hard to endure. Years of grief often cause life-long suffering.

Job, the biblical character demonstrating victory over many months of trauma provides every God-fearing person hope for tomorrow.

God taught me to love Him extremely as He traveled with me through the horror of observing my wife in search of a cure for cancer. There was no cure and death overtook her after many years.

What I discovered about my God is His allowance, sometimes, for extreme suffering. Job, the man, demonstrates God, indeed, delivers us from thinking that God is less than Who He really is. “He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return there. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away. May the name of the Lord be blessed!” In all this Job did not sin, nor did he charge God with moral impropriety.” Job 1:21-22 NASB.

Like Job, I found that through personal emotional pain that God allowed into my life, my relationship with Him was/is increased by His grace through faith. The very same avenue on by which He saved me so many years ago. I can say He called me into ministry the very same way. God is Lord in all things small and great.

Paul writes in Romans 5:1-5, “Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have also obtained access into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of God’s glory. Not only this, but we also rejoice in sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.”

The very same gifts of grace and faith providing salvation in Christ (Ephesians 2:8,) provide His purpose in His call for me to serve Him as being the glory of His love, power, and blessing toward others. Like the Apostle, I have “obtained access into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in the hope of God’s glory.” By His grace alone I was able to endure the deepest sorrows of life for many years. Alone I could not have done so.

I was never alone for God was and remains always present in all that I do each day. Not long ago I painted this image entitled “Thru it all.”

The Purpose of God’s Call

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.” Romans 8:28-30 NASB

Entering this passage can be daunting at many levels, however, we must understand the absolutes flowing from God’s expectations. God’s grace as seen in Ephesians chapter 2 empowers every person to believe and receive the gift of salvation as explained by Jesus Christ in John chapter 3. There we find Jesus teaching His friend Nicodemus, “For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not condemned. The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.” John 3:16-18. Here we find His grace expressed in man having the ability to receive or to decline the gift of salvation. “But God, being rich in mercy because of his great love with which he loved us, even though we were dead in offenses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you are saved! — and he raised us up together with him and seated us together with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, to demonstrate in the coming ages the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.” Ephesians 2:4-10. God’s Word does allow for every person to effectively respond to God’s call for salvation, “Yes” or “No.”

God’s call for all men to be saved is the emphasis of the Christ as He was dying on the Cross, However, before the Crucifixion, Jesus visited one named Zacheus to whom He said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” Luke 19:10.

God’s foreknowledge of the decisions of mankind does not affect how we respond to His grace. Those whom He calls (everyone) are all predestined to conform to His image, but not everyone agrees to follow Jesus’ call for salvation. And those who choose not to follow the Savior are condemned to the Lake of Fire. “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:10-15.

Let no one step outside the contextual boundaries of the Word of God. For this reason, we must read the inspired Text…all of it… to grasp the meaning of It. But Paul does write,  “and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.” The Lord calls and predestines everyone to be saved, but many do not heed the call, “”Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Matthew 7:13-14.

Remember WHOSE You Are

Believers must be very careful concerning when speaking about their faith and life in Jesus Christ. We MUST be mindful not only of who we are, but of Whose we are. Yes, I am a born-again conservative Southern Baptist.

However, when I speak of this please understand that my foundation of faith is in Jesus Christ, Period. He is the Cornerstone of all that I am. He was crucified, raised three days after His crucifixion, is coming again, AND His Holy Spirit lives in my life. I was saved by grace through faith in Him. There is no Other.

I might add that every day I am crucified with Him and the life I live I live by my faith in the Son of the Living God. Each day I am filled with His Spirit and am empowered by Him. Each day His armor is my protection from the temptations of the evil one, Satan. I am careful of what I say about who I am in Christ. Just at the Apostle Paul writes,  “But the one who boasts must boast in the Lord. For it is not the person who commends himself who is approved, but the person the Lord commends.” 2 Corinthians 10:17-18 HCSB. And I also concur with Paul, “Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was granted us in Christ Jesus from all eternity, but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher. For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.” 2 Timothy 1:8-14 NASB.

We Cannot Remove Sin, But

What you and I attempt to accomplish concerning personal sin does not work and never will. We are unable to remove our sin because we are the problem. Sin is not the problem, but listening to and walking into temptation IS the problem. However, Satan is the source of our problem. James writes, “Happy is the one who endures testing because when he has proven to be genuine, he will receive the crown of life that God promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each one is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires. Then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full grown, it gives birth to death.” James 1:12-15 HCSB.

The moment Adam and Eve looked beyond God’s for provision their/our world changed dramatically. Satan tempted them just as he does today. They succumbed to his words just as we do today. “When the woman saw that the tree produced fruit that was good for food, was attractive to the eye, and was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some of it to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.” Genesis 3:6-7.

Jesus is our Redeemer, the One who set in motion the prophesied work of God found in the Old Testament. Atonement. Look at what Jesus did in the desert, “Then Jesus said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You are to worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’Then the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to his needs.” Matthew 4:10-11. (Read Matthew chapter 4 for the entire narrative.)

The Spirit of God led Jesus into the wilderness where he fasted for 40 days and was tempted by Satan, but His final statement to the Devil reveals to everyone Who our Savior, our God is. We are to serve and worship Him only.

“For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. So when he came into the world, he said, “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me. Whole burnt offerings and sin-offerings you took no delight in. Then I said, ‘Here I am:I have come—it is written of me in the scroll of the book—to do your will, O God.’”  When he says above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sin-offerings you did not desire nor did you take delight in them” (which are offered according to the law), then he says, “Here I am: I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first to establish the second. By his will we have been made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” Hebrews 10:4-10.

The last thought given here leads us to what Jesus teaches us in Matthew 5:17-18, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter will pass from the law until everything takes place.” The work of Jesus will continue until He returns.

No, the word ‘atonement’ does not appear in the New Testament. However the New Testament provides the world with information concerning the atoning work of the Savior that is provided by our faith in Christ. When one confesses and repents of personal sin the Holy Spirit then effects the sacrifice of Christ; atonement takes place. Through our union with Christ we find the truth of what the Apostle Paul writes, “For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. (For rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person perhaps someone might possibly dare to die.) But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, because we have now been declared righteous by his blood, we will be saved through him from God’s wrath. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, since we have been reconciled, will we be saved by his life? Not only this, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation.” Romans 5:6-11.

There is no way to adequately discuss the process of the atoning work of Christ here, but please continue to read the Word of God in order to know the work of salvation by grace through faith in Him alone.

“But now Christ has come as the high priest of the good things to come. He passed through the greater and more perfect tent not made with hands, that is, not of this creation, and he entered once for all into the Most Holy Place not by the blood of goats and calves but by his own blood, and so he himself secured eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow sprinkled on those who are defiled consecrated them and provided ritual purity, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our consciences from dead works to worship the living God. And so he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the eternal inheritance he has promised, since he died to set them free from the violations committed under the first covenant.” Hebrews 9:11-15.

Believers ARE Made Righteous in Christ

There is a theological word, ‘imputed,’ that we who are Believers need to understand and make use of by utilizing a better word. From the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary we find:

“Imputed – – participle passive Charged to the account of; attributed; ascribed.” For my personal use I find ‘attribute’ to be best.

Believers find the righteousness of Christ to have been attributed to us because we cannot attain righteousness. Before salvation in Jesus Christ, we were sinners, and not righteous. Believers were not in a holy relationship with God. We continue to need Christ’s righteousness ascribed to our lives by faith. To approach Him we must have His holiness credited to our account.

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, the verbally abusive, and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God. Some of you once lived this way. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 HCSB.

“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

“And although you were dead in your offenses and sins, 2 in which you formerly lived according to this world’s present path, according to the ruler of the domain of the air, the ruler of the spirit that is now energizing the sons of disobedience, among whom all of us also formerly lived out our lives in the cravings of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath even as the rest… But God, being rich in mercy because of his great love with which he loved us, even though we were dead in offenses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you are saved! and he raised us up together with him and seated us together with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, to demonstrate in the coming ages the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.” Ephesians 2:1-10.

The importance of understanding of who a present Believer was as opposed to who that one now is cannot be overlooked. No longer are Believers ‘sinners,’ but now we are Believers having been made righteous because of what Jesus Christ accomplished for our behalf on the Cross.

We who choose to believe are now made one in Him by His grace.

Being “in Christ” explains that we have received His sacrifice for the redemption of our personal sins. Every sin we have committed has now been and future sins can be forgiven. “Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For no one is declared righteous before him by the works of the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. But now apart from the law the righteousness of God (although it is attested by the law and the prophets) has been disclosed namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe.”  Romans 3:19-22.. Paul also writes in Romans 5:10-11, “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, since we have been reconciled, will we be saved by his life? Not only this, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received this reconciliation.”

The Apostle did not complete the statement to the church in Rome, but said this to the Believers in Corinth, “So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away—look, what is new has come! And all these things are from God who reconciled us to himself through Christ and who has given us the ministry of reconciliation. In other words, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting people’s trespasses against them, and he has given us the message of reconciliation. Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making his plea through us. We plead with you on Christ’s behalf, “Be reconciled to God!” God made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we would become the righteousness of God.” 2 Corinthians 5:17-21.

A wonderful illustration of this righteousness is found in Jesus’ parable in Matthew 22:8-14 “Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but the ones who had been invited were not worthy. So go into the main streets and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’ And those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all they found, both bad and good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests. But when the king came in to see the wedding guests, he saw a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But he had nothing to say. Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Tie him up hand and foot and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!’ For many are called, but few are chosen.” Similarly, we are His invited guests and have been given a white robe of Christ’s righteousness. We receive this redemption of God’s grace by faith.

Atonement in Jesus Christ

From the 1823 Webster’s Dictionary,

“Atonement,

1. Agreement; concord; reconciliation, after enmity or controversy.            2. Expiation; satisfaction or reparation made by giving an equivalent for an injury, or by doing or suffering that which is received in satisfaction for an offense or injury; with for. “And Moses said to Aaron, go to the altar, and offer thy sin-offering, and thy burnt-offering, and make an atonement for thyself and for the people.” Leviticus 9:7.                  3. In theology, the expiation of sin made by the obedience and personal sufferings of Christ.”

ATO’NE, adverb [at and one.] At one; together.                  ATO’NE, verb intransitive [Supposed to be compounded of at and one. Latin ad and unus, unio.]

To stand as an equivalent; to make reparation, amends or satisfaction for an offense or a crime, by which reconciliation is procured between the offended and offending parties.

To atone for, to make compensation or amends.”

The question for now is, “What is the Atonement” as found in Scripture?  In the Word of God we find God’s Son as the Suffering Servant paying the penalty for the sins of humankind. On the Cross, we observe the effects of our sin falling upon Jesus Christ and we are reconciled to God by our expression of faith in Him. Jesus Christ was the only One capable of carrying out the Atonement for all mankind. We most often use the word ‘redemption,’ and therefore refer to the Lord Jesus as our Redeemer.

Historically speaking the word ‘atonement’ was not utilized as a theological term but only in expressions concerning “reconciliation,” and most often as a transaction between two entities. However, it took on a more exclusively among religious bodies for theological understanding.

The word is used only in the Old Testament and primarily in the first five books of the Pentateuch. Never do we find atonement being used in the New Testament. And this word is curiously absent although we use it often in Bible Studies discussing salvation.

As discussed,  in the OT ‘atonement’ speaks of a person being cleansed from sin or defilement in some way:

“This is the law of the one who bears a child, for the male or the female child. If she cannot afford a sheep, then she must take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and one for a sin offering, and the priest is to make atonement on her behalf, and she will be clean.’” Leviticus 7b-8 NASB.

Some diseases were healed and we find, “The priest must then perform the sin offering and make atonement for the one being cleansed from his impurity. After that he is to slaughter the burnt offering, and the priest is to offer the burnt offering and the grain offering on the altar. So the priest is to make atonement for him and he will be clean.” Leviticus 14:19.

However, most commonly the word is employed for sacrifices for individual sinners. In Leviticus chapter 16 is found the commandment from God explaining the Day of Atonement for sins of the Nation of Israel being cleansed by animal sacrifice.

Paul writes that Christ died “for our sins” in 1 Corinthians and in Galatians. “Now I want to make clear for you, brothers and sisters, the gospel that I preached to you, that you received and on which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I passed on to you as of first importance what I also received—that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures.” 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 and “I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20-21 NET2.  Before the death of Christ, our sins separated us from God. After His death our sins were transferred to Christ, and “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.” 1 Peter 2:24-25 NASB.

Because of the sacrifice of Christ, Believers have been saved, justified, forgiven, and adopted into the Body of Christ, the Church. No one can describe what we have in Christ. Yes, ‘atonement’ is not used in the New Testament, and in the Old Testament is enough explanation for the sacrifice of Christ for lost sinners.

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love that He had for us, made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! Together with Christ Jesus He also raised us up and seated us in the heavens, so that in the coming ages He might display the immeasurable riches of His grace through His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift — not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are His creation, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time so that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:4-10 HCSB.
