The Line Drawn

I find it necessary to encourage everyone reading this document to be careful to observe every biblical quotation within the context in which it is found. “Proof-texting” is a horrible way to read and study the Word of God.

From the early days of my walk in Christ the use of the word ‘backsliding’ has been utilized to describe so-called Christians who live in sin, they do not walk with Christ. However, this word is only used in the Old Testament mostly to describe Israel. Never is this word used in the New Testament. This fact alone should tell us something. “For the love of Christ controls us, since we have concluded this, that Christ died for all; therefore all have died. And he died for all so that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised. So then from now on we acknowledge no one from an outward human point of view. Even though we have known Christ from such a human point of view, now we do not know him in that way any longer. So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away—look, what is new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:14-17 NASB.

Jesus said this, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have not come to abolish these things but to fulfill them. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth pass away not the smallest letter or stroke of a letter will pass from the law until everything takes place. So anyone who breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever obeys them and teaches others to do so will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness goes beyond that of the experts in the law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven!” Matthew 5:17-20.

“So then, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I am speaking to thoughtful people. Consider what I say. Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread that we break a sharing in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all share the one bread. Look at the people of Israel. Are not those who eat the sacrifices partners in the altar? Am I saying that idols or food sacrificed to them amount to anything? No, I mean that what the pagans sacrifice is to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be partners with demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot take part in the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Or are we trying to provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we really stronger than he is?” 1 Corinthians 10:14-22.

“For it is impossible in the case of those who have once been enlightened, tasted the heavenly gift, become partakers of the Holy Spirit, tasted the good word of God and the miracles of the coming age, and then have committed apostasy, to renew them again to repentance, since they are crucifying the Son of God for themselves all over again and holding him up to contempt. For the ground that has soaked up the rain that frequently falls on it and yields useful vegetation for those who tend it receives a blessing from God. But if it produces thorns and thistles, it is useless and about to be cursed; its fate is to be burned. But in your case, dear friends, even though we speak like this, we are convinced of better things relating to salvation. For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love you have demonstrated for his name, in having served and continuing to serve the saints.” Hebrew 6:4-10.

The following statements contain ‘the line drawn,’

“Every kingdom divided against itself is destroyed, and no town or house divided against itself will stand. So if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason they will be your judges. But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has already overtaken you. How else can someone enter a strong man’s house and steal his property, unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can thoroughly plunder the house. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. For this reason I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” Matthew 12:25(b)-32.

The Apostle Paul’s statement in Romans chapter 7:14-25, at least in my mind, is the pivotal point of influence for interpreting the remainder of the New Testament letters.

To say that Paul is speaking of himself as a Christian in vv 14-25 enables every Believer to say, “I am a sinner.” Sin and the old man are who I am and I cannot help myself. My backslidden condition keeps me from the righteousness provided by God. No, I am not lost, but I live as if I am.” Oftentimes the parable of ‘The Lost Son’ is cited when addressing the topic ‘backslidden.’

On the other side of the same coin, we find the Apostle addressing his life before his encounter with Christ on the Road to Damascus. With this is the thought, “I occasionally sin, but do not ‘practice’ the same and ‘in Christ’ my struggle is with temptation coming from Satan’s minions outside of who I am. The indwelling Holy Spirit will not allow me to participate in the darkness because I am of the Light. For just as Paul says, “I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20.

Really, this is an ongoing discussion having been with the Church since Paul wrote Romans chapter 7. Where you stand is critical to understanding your walk with Jesus Christ. Be certain of who you are and Whose you are.

Spiritual Warfare, What is This?

Simply stated as we read the New Testament we can easily find that Satan sends his minions to war against those who are Believers and Followers of the Son of God. These evil spirits decry the truth found in the Word of God and attempt to deceive all who are born-again Believers and have chosen to follow the instructions of Jesus Christ.

For this alone, you and I must adhere to the instructions of the Holy Spirit found in Paul’s letter to Ephesus, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.” Ephesians 6:10-13, NASB.

I find those who are standing against the Word of God are the members of the armies of Satan and war against me every day. Being only aware of them is not enough, I must put on the Armor of God each day when I awaken. Without this protection, my daily life would be in shambles, but because He has taught me to live prepared I am victorious in Christ for it is He who lives in me. Please follow the instructions of the Christ found in His Word. Do not listen to me or anyone else, listen to the words of Jesus. Otherwise, you and I will be found lacking.

I Am ‘Old School’

When I say that “I am ‘old school’” I am referring to “Bible Belt” evangelicalism expressed in revivals, personal evangelism, church growth, and the invitation. This is mostly a memory to those of us born before 2000 AD.

Today, I have this question, “Just where is the evangelical movement headed?” Can the folks who occupy local churches help themselves? Not if there is no recognition of the “Presence of God before we get there,” and not if ‘the fear of offending anyone in the community’ is not resolved. Paul said this in Acts 17:22-30, “Therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent, because He has set a day when He is going to judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.” The ‘Call to Repentance’ is seldom heard from pulpits today.

Only a Spirit-born revival can save us from the surrounding darkness enveloping the local church. What I do know is simple, Christ and his Body are alive and well. However, the local church is contaminated with fear that is not a part of the Body.

For some years an odd fear has crept into the heart of local church life eliminating the powerful moment of “Just As I Am.” We once called for lost sinners to “step forward and pray to receive the gift of salvation found in the Risen Savior.” This has been replaced with, “If you want to talk, one of our staff will meet you in the welcome area after the service.”

What we know as salvation is demonstrated in a new life of sanctification produced by the Holy Spirit in the life of the Believer. We find this in Galatians 5:22-26, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit. We must not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.” HCSB. This is the evidence of the reality of saving faith.

What We Must Understand

Believers, Followers of the Lord Jesus Christ understand Who and Whose they are. Those who are on the outside looking in will always ridicule, belittle, and attempt to change who you are, to recruit you for the cause of darkness. We must understand the One we are to fear is the One who is able to destroy both body and soul in Hell. Unbelievers are those who are in trouble, not us.

“For this is what the Lord says: “When 70 years for Babylon are complete, I will attend to you and will confirm My promise concerning you to restore you to this place. For I know the plans I have for you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. You will call to Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“and I will restore your fortunes and gather you from all the nations and places where I banished you”—this is the Lord’s declaration. “I will restore you to the place I deported you from.” Jeremiah 29:10-14 HCSB.

“What we as born-again Believers in Jesus Christ is simple, “ Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19.

Where do we find the Lord? We find Him always present in our bodies. He is always there. We do not have to search for Him. He may take us to some difficult places, but what we can be certain of is He is always with us. He guides us in every step for “For I know the plans I have for you”—this is the Lord’s declaration—“plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

The “Touch” of the The Master’s Hand

Matthew 17:7 is often overlooked, but we should pause and enjoy this moment with Jesus’ disciples. Please note the context of Matthew 17:1-7, “Six days later Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them privately up a high mountain. And he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. Then Moses and Elijah also appeared before them, talking with him. So Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, I will make three shelters—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my one dear Son, in whom I take great delight. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they were overwhelmed with fear and threw themselves down with their faces to the ground. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Do not be afraid.” When they looked up, all they saw was Jesus alone.” CSB.

I once painted a picture of a bearded old man wearing a worn straw hat and playing a well-used fiddle or violin. This image came to mind while listening to the recording, having been heard by so many, about a violin being sold at auction. Until a Master Instrumentalist came forward, tuned the instrument, and began to play, there was little value placed upon it. But, how the touch of a Master’s hand changed the value!

These 8 verses give us an account of the Transfiguration of our Lord as He stood with these 3 men. No doubt they were in complete awe and fear as they observed this powerful moment in time. Matthew tells us that they threw themselves face down onto the ground and “Jesus touched them.” He assured them there was nothing to be afraid of. I can imagine what I may have said, “Are You kidding me?”

Often I have been touched by the hand of the Master. Have you?

Temptation: What We Know

The Word of God addresses the issue of temptation and provides us Believers with the tools to overcome what I call ‘defeatism.’ And there is no need to fear.

Reading and studying Scripture is the first standard against temptation. From Psalm 119:9-12 we find, “How can a young person maintain a pure life? By guarding it according to your instructions. With all my heart I seek you. Do not allow me to stray from your commands. In my heart I store up your words, so I might not sin against you. You deserve praise, O Lord. Teach me your statutes.”

1.“So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall. No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it.” 1 Corinthians 10:12-13, Net2.

2. “Adulterers, do you not know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? So whoever decides to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy. Or do you think the scripture means nothing when it says, “The spirit that God caused to live within us has an envious yearning”?  But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.” So submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and make your hearts pure, you double-minded.” James 4:4-8.

 3. “My Father, if possible, let this cup pass from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, “So, couldn’t you stay awake with me for one hour? Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:39-41. Jesus cousnels us to remain faithful, to ‘stay in the game,’ and that prayer is a most important offense against temptatio. What I know among us is a tendency to become fearful. Jesus encourages us to maintain our moral integrity.

4. “Finally, be strengthened in the Lord and in the strength of his power. Clothe yourselves with the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens. For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand.” Ephesians 6:10-13. Paul addresses our need for Divine protection against temptation being the entire Armor of God. We must equip our lives with God’s truth, righteousness, and faith.

5. “Therefore consider carefully how you live—not as unwise but as wise, taking advantage of every opportunity because the days are evil. For this reason do not be foolish, but be wise by understanding what the Lord’s will is. And do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit.” Ephesians 5:15-18. Walking in the Spirit isthe antidote to succumbing to our desires and the temptations surrounding them. The Apostle here addresses the power of living by the Holy Spirit’s instruction.

6. “I hereby guide you in the way of wisdom, and I lead you in upright paths. When you walk, your steps will not be hampered, and when you run, you will not stumble. Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; protect it, because it is your life. Do not enter the path of the wicked or walk in the way of those who are evil. Avoid it, do not go on it; turn away from it, and go on.” Proverbs 4:11-15. Wisdom literature in Scripture advises us to avoid those who lead toward temptation. We are to choose a path leading to God’s righteousness.

7. “Be sober and alert. Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour. Resist him, strong in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are enduring the same kinds of suffering. And, after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him belongs the power forever. Amen.” 1 Peter 5:8-11.  Satan is always seeking to challenge our weaknesses and Peter instructs us to remain vigilant. Our faith is a crucial element to stand against temptation.

8. “Happy is the one who endures testing because when he has proven to be genuine, he will receive the crown of life that God promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each one is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires. Then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full grown, it gives birth to death.” James 1:12-15. (Please read the 11 verses prior to vv 12-15) Temptation is not from God but comes from our individual desires.Temptation comes from Satan an our responsibility is to face Satan’s temptations with the Word of God.

Living ‘In Christ’

Often I ask this question, “How or Why do so many Christians speak of so much conflict and difficulties in life?” Never have I found anything that qualifies as ‘an answer.’  However, I think I do know why the life I live in Christ Jesus does not know what it means to have these kinds of struggles. ‘Struggles’ I have known, but not because I am a Believer. Struggles of some sort are the result of living on this planet.

I do have an answer as to why this life I live is in Christ because the process we know as ‘Sanctification.’ This is the result of knowing Christ as Savior and Lord. The following is not ‘a formula’ as such, but rather are some Scriptures that I have found to be true in my daily life in Christ. What I know is simple: “the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20(b). And this I want for all who are Believers and Followers of Jesus Christ:

1. “For Moses writes about the righteousness that is by the law: “The one who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we preach), because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and thus has righteousness and with the mouth one confesses and thus has salvation. For the scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”  For there is no distinction between the Jew and the Greek, for the same Lord is Lord of all, who richly blesses all who call on him. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:5-13.

2. “But God, being rich in mercy because of his great love with which he loved us, even though we were dead in offenses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you are saved! — and he raised us up together with him and seated us together with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, to demonstrate in the coming ages the surpassing wealth of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his creative work, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we can do them.” Ephesians 2:4-10.

3. “Therefore I exhort you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a sacrifice—alive, holy, and pleasing to God—which is your reasonable service. Do not be conformed to this present world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may test and approve what is the will of God—what is good and well-pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:1-2.

4. “For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.” Where is the wise man? Where is the expert in the Mosaic law? Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? For since in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom did not know God, God was pleased to save those who believe by the foolishness of preaching. For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom, but we preach about a crucified Christ, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles. But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” 1 Corinthians 1:18-25.

5. “yet we know that no one is justified by the works of the law but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by the faithfulness of Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified. But if while seeking to be justified in Christ we ourselves have also been found to be sinners, is Christ then one who encourages sin? Absolutely not! But if I build up again those things I once destroyed, I demonstrate that I am one who breaks God’s law. For through the law I died to the law so that I may live to God. I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside God’s grace, because if righteousness could come through the law, then Christ died for nothing!” Galatians 2:16-21.

6. “Therefore consider carefully how you live—not as unwise but as wise, taking advantage of every opportunity because the days are evil. For this reason do not be foolish, but be wise by understanding what the Lord’s will is. And do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music in your hearts to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Ephesians 5:15-21.

7. “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content in any circumstance. I have experienced times of need and times of abundance. In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of contentment, whether I go satisfied or hungry, have plenty or nothing. I am able to do all things through the one who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:11-13.

8. “But the one who boasts must boast in the Lord. For it is not the person who commends himself who is approved, but the person the Lord commends.” 2 Corinthians 10:17-18.

Your Heart Follows Your Faith

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.

Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ” Luke 12:32-34 NASB.

The Way of Jesus is the only way to Heaven, and by the faith He has given me my life belongs to Him alone.

Knowing and following Christ Jesus is not so difficult as some say because His presence in the life of those who know Him makes the Way easier. But, yes, ‘being’ a Christian can be difficult depending upon one’s view of Him and that of sin. If one is more fearful of sin than of Satan THAT is a huge distraction, but there is more.

As found in Joshua 24:15, I choose to serve the Lord. Also, “Therefore do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a cent? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:26-31.

War for Our Nation

Politicians all are waging war against one another decrying, “They are against the Constitution” and many other statements. Who is who and who is correct? We all understand, “I am!!” Who is, then, “I am?” As a ‘religionist’ wanting America’s government in Washington, D.C. to be highly influenced by Christians, I find many who do not want that, either…even some Christians. How about, ‘many?’

The question is, “Where does this influence begin and stop?” I would think, “At the ballot box.” But let me say, “Everyone else on the street and at the ballot box is saying, ‘religion’ must be personal and nothing more.” The truth of this is not simple, but it is simple. We all have religions, each of us.

Americans who study our republican/democratic construction continue to find our history gives a foundation for the war we are presently engaged. What we now know is many wish to displace, not replace, American justice, the rule of law and order, the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution with social justice. As the Patriot, Patrick Henry said, “Give me liberty or give me death” may now become our rallying call again. He also reminded us that we are foremost, “Americans!!”

“America will never be defeated from outside. If we falter and lose our freedom, it will come from the inside.” – – Abraham Lincoln. And Lincoln agreed with Jesus Christ, “ And knowing their thoughts Jesus said to them, “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and any city or house divided against itself will not stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? If I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? For this reason they will be your judges. But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. Or how can anyone enter the strong man’s house and carry off his property, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me scatters.” Matthew 12:25-30 NASB.

Our present American war from within, simply stated, is Good vs. Evil. Like it or not our religious values are clearly stated.

Christ in Me (Us) the Hope of Glory

“I have become its servant, according to God’s administration that was given to me for you, to make God’s message fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to His saints. God wanted to make known among the Gentiles the glorious wealth of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Colossians 1:24-27 HCSB. This is the Gospel of God which is His power for salvation to all that believe. Romans 1:16-17. It is in Him, His salvation, that we discover His righteousness given to every Believer.

Every single day I awaken concerned for every lost person to discover the salvation provided to them by the Risen Christ. AND, I am concerned for every Believer who somehow thinks sin lives in them along with the Holy Spirit.

Are we not reminded of Jesus walking through the Temple turning over the tables of those who were making His Father’s House a place of merchandising? “And He said to them, “It is written, My house will be called a house of prayer.” Matthew 21:13. We must also remember, “Don’t you know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Here, Paul is reminding us we must not prostitute our bodies with acts of sin. This physical body was purchased by Christ at the Cross. He lives in us, body and spirit. Our bodies and our spirits are His. We belong solely to Him.

Yes, I am on a critical mission proclaiming the Message of the Cross. That Message is “Christ in me, Christ in every Believer, the hope of Glory.” No, sin does not live in us, the Risen Christ, the Person of the Holy Spirit, lives in us!!
