The “Touch” of the The Master’s Hand

Matthew 17:7 is often overlooked, but we should pause and enjoy this moment with Jesus’ disciples. Please note the context of Matthew 17:1-7, “Six days later Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John the brother of James, and led them privately up a high mountain. And he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. Then Moses and Elijah also appeared before them, talking with him. So Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, I will make three shelters—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my one dear Son, in whom I take great delight. Listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they were overwhelmed with fear and threw themselves down with their faces to the ground. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Do not be afraid.” When they looked up, all they saw was Jesus alone.” CSB.

I once painted a picture of a bearded old man wearing a worn straw hat and playing a well-used fiddle or violin. This image came to mind while listening to the recording, having been heard by so many, about a violin being sold at auction. Until a Master Instrumentalist came forward, tuned the instrument, and began to play, there was little value placed upon it. But, how the touch of a Master’s hand changed the value!

These 8 verses give us an account of the Transfiguration of our Lord as He stood with these 3 men. No doubt they were in complete awe and fear as they observed this powerful moment in time. Matthew tells us that they threw themselves face down onto the ground and “Jesus touched them.” He assured them there was nothing to be afraid of. I can imagine what I may have said, “Are You kidding me?”

Often I have been touched by the hand of the Master. Have you?

Jesus is Lord!!
