My Greatest Fear

We often hear people speak of things about which they are concerned, and rightfully so.  Religious leaders of all kinds predict ‘the end is near.’ These are political, economic, and spiritual concerns threatening every area of our existence. Whether real or imagined these words speak of heart-felt tinges looming ahead.

The vast majority of people in this world will never know the power of Jesus Christ living within. Every Believer who is, indeed, a Follower of Jesus knows and understands the truth of what they read to be one chosen by Him to serve Him. Being His Disciple is unique and carries with it an enormous responsibility.

Of whom or what should we be afraid? Several figures in the Bible were sometimes in fear for their lives. Moses, Joseph, Daniel, Esther, Jeremiah, Samuel, Ezekiel, Peter, Luke, Paul, Mary, Martha, and many others. Perhaps David is the one person who may have had more reasons to fear.  He was often hunted. The Psalms are replete with many terrors he faced.

David wrote in Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation. I fear no one. The Lord protects my life. I am afraid of no one” NASB. And, ‘No,’ I have never had those kinds of fears surrounding me…ever. But, I do know the same God Who is responsible for having kept me safe on a few occasions as a Missionary serving Him in Peru. One especially stands out because of the armed terrorist sitting behind me in my vehicle. God provided for my safety, and here I am speaking about that moment in time.

Believers in the Risen Savior are to be saved from God’s wrath and destruction. Safety is probably the best way of describing what God offers us through the power of the Gospel, for just as Paul writes, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel from faith to faith, just as it is written, “The righteous by faith will live.” Romans 1:16-17.  This truth is simple, “For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him.”  John 3:16-17.

However, there is a fear that is far superior to anything I have ever known and what you have ever experienced. Our faith in Christ cast aside these fears forever. For us as Believers the most intimidating, longest-lasting terror has been turned away and destroyed. But, what is that superior fear?

There is no fear of Satan for he is a defeated foe nor do I fear because I speak of Jesus in a public place from time to time. My fear is never for myself, but for those who do not know the Savior. Jesus said, “Do not be afraid of them, for nothing is hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing is secret that will not be made known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light, and what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew 10:26-28.

Jesus is Lord.
