From the 1828 Webster’s Dictionary:
“The act or quality of taking much upon one’s self; that species of pride which consists in exorbitant claims of rank, dignity, estimation or power, or which exalts the worth or importance of the person to an undue degree; proud contempt of others; conceitedness; presumption.”
A friend stated something about arrogance and the Holy Spirit convinced me to write something about this. He pointed out that my boast should only be about Jesus Christ. Folks, without Him I am nothing…
For as the Apostle Paul writes, “ Brothers, consider your calling: Not many are wise from a human perspective, not many powerful, not many of noble birth. Instead, God has chosen what is foolish in the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen what is weak in the world to shame the strong. God has chosen what is insignificant and despised in the world—what is viewed as nothing—to bring to nothing what is viewed as something, so that no one can boast in His presence. But it is from Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who became God-given wisdom for us—our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption, in order that, as it is written: The one who boasts must boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 HCSB.
Furthermore, as I write about who I am in Christ, this statement is NOT about me, but only concerns who I am because He is in me, the Hope of Glory.
I am not broken for Christ in the Person of the Holy Spirit lives in me and continues to repair anything that might be broken about who I am. You see, He is the Potter and my body is but the clay, and He molds and makes me every day to keep me in His repair.
“Hannah prayed: My heart rejoices in the Lord; my horn is lifted up by the Lord. My mouth boasts over my enemies, because I rejoice in Your salvation. There is no one holy like the Lord. There is no one besides You! And there is no rock like our God. Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogant words come out of your mouth, for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and actions are weighed by Him… He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness, for a man does not prevail by his own strength. Those who oppose the Lord will be shattered; He will thunder in the heavens against them. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth. He will give power to His king; He will lift up the horn of His anointed.” 1 Samuel 2:1-3; 9-10.
Nothing, not one single statement that I now write or have ever written concerns who I am alone for I do nothing apart from the Risen Lord Jesus Christ. “I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. For just as Paul writes concerning his struggles as a faithful Follower of Jesus and as a result understands that his strength and endurance are supplied through the Christ.
Finally, I agree with the Apostle, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew, and also to the Greek. For in it God’s righteousness is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17.
Jesus is Lord.
